Pre-Trip: Jonker Street

Jonker Street, also called Jalan Hang Jebat, was the name street through Malacca town, in what is today the core of the Malacca Unesco World Heritage Site. The name jonker is said to mean "junk", referring to the Chinese vessels.

Jonker Street was where the different Chinese clans had their clan associations. Among them, the Hokkiens established theirs in 1837, along with the clan associations of the Tan, Lee, and other clans. Most of the shophouses along Jonker Street date to the early part of the 20th century, although some even goes back to the 19th century.

Jonker Street used to be renowned for its antique shops.  However, over the years, it turned to house clothing and crafts stalls, as well as restaurants.  Many iconic dishes of Malacca can be found there, like chendol, chicken riceball and pineapple tarts.  However, it is at night, where Jonker Street is most notable.  During Fridays and Saturdays, the night market opens its doors to the public.  There, one can find tasty treats from the past, cheap keepsakes and street food from many parts of the world.
